Coming out is the best decision I have ever made by far. Ever since I was young, I have always known I was gay. However, having been raised in China where homosexuality, at large, is regarded as diseased and abnormal, it made me disguise myself and run away from girls who showed affection to me.
Not until I came to the UK three years ago, did I feel comfortable and safe enough to have finally stepped out of that closet. Although the UK appears to be more inclusive than China, statistics show that one in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced a hate crime because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
That is why I have decided to be part of the Advocacy Programme MoMa’s Cookies UK have launched, to raise awareness for my chosen organisation, Q Space, that supports young people and the wider LGBTQ+ community. I am excited to play a part in this programme in terms of making a contribution, no matter how big or small, and bringing more equality to the LGBTQ+ community.
